Community Foundation of the Lowcountry

Second Helpings

In one day alone, a Second Helpings truck manned by two volunteers will make up to twelve pickups from groceries and restaurants and six drop offs to churches and local nonprofits. The outreach activities offered by Second Helpings originated in 1992 with 14 individuals who collected and distributed 46,000 pounds in one year. In 2005, the amount of food distributed increased to 1,500,000 pounds in three refrigerated trucks manned by 256 volunteers. Funding from the Community Foundation provided for a new truck for the agency to continue its vital work.
