August 18, 2010 -- Hilton Head Island - - The Hilton Head Island Foundation Endowment Fund, a fund of the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry, and other designated funds, recently awarded nearly $72,000 to local nonprofit organizations to strengthen and build programs.
The Deep Well Project was awarded a grant in the amount of $15,000 for the food distribution project. During the past three years Deep Well has experienced a huge increase in food requests by Islanders who have been caught in the economic downturn. In 2007, Deep Well made 824 deliveries to 2,381 people. In 2008 they made 1,154 deliveries to 2,955 people, and in 2009 they made 1,195 deliveries to 3,144 people.
Hilton Head Island Safe Harbour was awarded a grant of $26,800 to expand the program into more Hilton Head Island neighborhoods. Although Safe Harbour has no age requirement for membership, the elderly are the largest part of their membership. Also currently served are the permanently and temporarily disabled. Safe Harbour offers varied support services to their members who pay a $500 annual fee. Support services include transportation to doctors, stores, and social events; grocery shopping; assistance with household chores; regular phone calls and visits; respite for caregivers; and technical help.
The Mental Health Association of Beaufort and Jasper Counties received a grant in the amount of $30,000 for the Island House Employment Program. This project provides Island House clients an opportunity to explore and enter the world of work which has been previously unavailable to them.
