Community Foundation of the Lowcountry Invests More than $128,000 in the Work of Area Nonprofits

November 23, 2009 HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC -- The Hilton Head Island Foundation Endowment Fund, a fund of the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry, and other designated funds, recently awarded $128,990 to local nonprofit organizations to strengthen and build programs.

Bluffton Self Help received a grant in the amount of $15,000 for rent and housing costs as well as utilities assistance. Bluffton Self Help has seen a 40% increase in new clients needing rent/housing and utility assistance.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Lowcountry - Bluffton Unit received a grant in the amount of up to $28,000 to implement the Goals for Graduation project. Funding will cover, in part, the services of a clinical counselor and one half of the membership fees for participating freshmen from Bluffton High School.

Family Promise of Beaufort County received a grant in the amount of $31,000 for a professional part-time Case Manager to provide homeless family members with the skills, tools, and resources to sustain housing and build a better future.

Hope Haven of the Lowcountry received a grant in the amount $17,640 for additional hours of a contract Pediatric Child Abuse Medical Provider. It is anticipated that medical exams will need to be provided for approximately 150 children for a full year which is a 64% increase in child abuse referrals in 2009 compared to 2008. The funding also includes an equipment stipend for the purchase of a laptop computer and necessary software for the provider to document work based on state standards, plus to use for data entry purposes.

OSPREY Village received a challenge grant in the amount of $25,000 for Phase I of the startup research and development that is needed to have a successful residential program for intellectually and developmentally disabled adults in the Hilton Head Island and Greater Bluffton area.

Second Helpings received a grant in the amount of $12,350 for expansion of services, equipment costs and technology upgrades.
