Broad Creek Public Service District Awards $10,000 to Project SAFE

Fund to be used for sewer hook-ups for low-income homeowners

August 1, 2009 HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC -- Broad Creek PSD recently awarded $10,000 to Project SAFE from the Bucks for a Better Island Program.

Marshall Katz, Chairman of the Board of Commissioners for Broad Creek PSD stated, "The district is pleased to be able to do this. We as a board are 100% behind this effort."

Project SAFE, which stands for sewer access for everyone, was established at the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry in 2000. The fund provides financial assistance for low- and moderate-income families to cover their cost of connecting to the public sewer system.

Currently, about 1,500 households in the Hilton Head Island Public Service District are not connected to the public sewer system, relying instead upon septic systems to treat their household wastewater. It is estimated that 600 of these customers are low- and moderate-income households that struggle to meet their share of the connection cost once the PSD makes sewer service available. That is where the financial assistance of Project SAFE comes into play.
