Founded in 1994, with proceeds from the sale of the Hilton Head Hospital, the Hilton Head Island Foundation served the communities of Southern Beaufort County.
In July 2001, the community foundation's Board of Trustees approved creating an expanded organization to encompass a larger service area and the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry was established.

The four counties we serve, Beaufort, Colleton, Hampton, and Jasper, are linked in many ways such as through economies, nonprofit organizations, and educational institutions. With this in mind, our expansion was designed to improve the quality of life in the region by extending availability of the principles and benefits of the community foundation concept.
