Every week we have a family support group that meets at our Outreach Center. These women learn new skills (budgeting, parenting, etc.) from speakers. They also gain great insight into how they can strengthen their families by expanding their circle of support and how to make good decisions regarding the well-being of their families. They also learn about new jobs and skills and are encouraged to pursue paths that will help them find more stable footing in today's world. Families participating in CAPA's Family Support Program have been introduced to the Angel Food Network whereby they can pay (cash or money order) for a box of food valued at over $80 monthly (a cooperative of sorts). Unfortunately, because the order must be paid for at the time of placing the order this can create a shortfall in the immediate time because the family does not get the food for several weeks. Some families have been reluctant to participate. We would like to be able to pay for their first month as an incentive to fully participate in the program. They would pay for the next order when they received their monthly food. Angel Food Network also accepts food stamps. In order for the family to receive this scholarship, they would be required to meet parent support meeting guidelines which stipulate that they regularly attend and have performed community service.
Why this connection makes a difference:
With the rise in fuel costs which directly impacts food prices as well, families are struggling. Families enrolled in our Family Support Program, PS We Love You are taught how to reduce stressors by adopting a proactive approach rather than being reactive. Money for food is critical for everyone, adults and children alike. When children do not get enough to eat, it is not unusual for a report of child neglect to be made. Working with families to maximize their earnings is an excellent way to improve their day-to-day lives. This is a way to practice the parable of teaching a man to fish rather than just giving him fish to eat. The Angel Food Network is not based on income eligibility. It represents good value for your money.
