Power Hour

We would like to request funding to supplement the cost of supplies associated with operating Project Learn in Jasper, Colleton, Hampton and Sheldon Units of the Boys & Girls Club of the Lowcountry. The objective of Project Learn is to improve school performance. Project Learn is based on Dr. Reginald Clark's research, which found that children do better in school when they are engaged in meaningful activities outside of school. The Boys & Girls Club's five core program areas of Character and Leadership Development, Education and Career Development, Health and Life Skills, the Arts and Sports, Fitness and Recreation provide opportunities for high-yield learning activities. In addition to daily homework help through Power Hour, the tutoring component of Project Learn, fun but meaningful activities like board games, creative writing and leisure reading are considered high-yield learning activities known to improve children's grades.

Why this connection makes a difference:
This program makes a difference because the majority of our members in these economically distressed communities have limited or no access to educational enhancement activities. The Boys & Girls Clubs in Sheldon, Hampton, Colleton and Jasper Counties offer the educational support that many of our parents are unable to undertake due to jobs that take them far distances from home every day. With funding from this program, we will have the ability to replenish consumable supplies, like pencils, paper, notebooks, crayons, etc. We will have the resources to replace worn out games and equipment that the children look forward to using regularly. When you consider the fact that Project Learn has helped us increase grades in over 50% of the children in our membership at these rural Clubs, the difference this program makes is significant.
