To educate the community on how they can assist the caregivers of those individuals diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, other related dementias and similar neurological disorders. Educational sessions explain Alzheimer's disease, the impact it has on the caregivers, the impact it has on the community, and the ways the average person can help to improve the caregiver's quality of life while contributing to the local community. Sessions are offered free to all, and are held at public venues, i.e. libraries, places of worship. Rotary Club meetings, etc. Presentations may be requested or scheduled by the presenter for health fairs or in association with other events.
Why this connection makes a difference:
Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) are diagnosed in 13% of the population over the age of 65, and 50% of the population over the age of 85. In Beaufort County, approximately 34% of the population will be 65 and older by the year 2025. The average survival time following diagnosis is four to six years, and may last up to 20 years. 25% of the caregivers provide 40+ hours of care per week, and 71% of these caregivers do this for a year. 32% do it for more than 3 years. 40% of the caregivers report high levels of emotional stress. The stress is so high that the hospitalization of an ADRD individual correlated to a 6.5% death rate average in caregivers. Stress can be relieved by community involvement and support from private individuals.
