The great women's professional tennis player Martina Navratilova said "Disability is a matter of perception...If you can do one thing well, you're needed by someone." Adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities can do many things well!

The Community Foundation of the Lowcountry is to be commended for providing this meaningful work opportunity. Jennifer is providing an essential service and filling a genuine need.

There are many adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities just like Jennifer throughout the Lowcountry who are looking for employment opportunities. Many of the are Members at Programs for Exceptional People.

The mission of Programs for Exceptional People is to empower adults with special needs in southern Beaufort County by promoting independence and offering opportunities for social growth and maturity. One of the ways that PEP empowers adults with special needs is through employment opportunities. PEP works to discover and help place some of these adults in independent work opportunities. In addition PEP works with employers and provides supported employment work enclaves by taking several adults with special needs along with a job coach and performing work at a place of employment such as rolling silverware at a restaurant or labeling inventory at the hospital. Finally, PEP provides employment opportunities at PEP's facility through the PEP Pottery Program funded by the Community Foundation and also through the Work Activity Center where our Members assimilate bulk mailings and fold/process materials.

The Community Foundation of the Lowcountry, Carrabbas Restaurant, Hilton Head Medical Center, McDonald's, Pizza Hut, Omega Printing and TJ Maxx are a few of the area businesses working with Programs for Exceptional People to help provide employment opportunities for adults with special needs.

"It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men." -- Frederick Douglass

Thank you Denise for a thoughtful message about the men in our and our children's lives. I encourage anyone who can to give a bit of time and their wisdom to the younger ones to do so.

There are Boys & Girls Clubs in Beaufort, Jasper, Bluffton and on Hilton Head Island. It's good for the kids, good for the those volunteering and good for the overall community. Many times, kids teach us more than we teach them --- leaving us with wisdom versus the other way around. They may never know that but they know that someone cares --and that foundation builds more lessons and wisdom than we will ever know.

"A child can ask questions that a wise man cannot answer." Author Unknown

The work of the Public Art Committee over the last several years, which culminated in making this sculpture happen, was incredible! The staff and board of the Community Foundation so much appreciate the many volunteer hours, dollars raised, and the creative talents of these people. Thank you so much, Mark, and your amazing committee!

Wow. What a great piece. Thank you. Fortunately, I'm not tired. However, it is tuff out there. And the demands are ever increasing from every angle and every day. I personally need and appreciate words of encouragement and fellowship in the mission. That truly is what inspires me. Lynn

Denise,
What an inspiration to read your post about what we DID NOT do in 2009. I am so proud of you and the Foundation. Great leadership really shows when an organization faces the challenges we faced in 2009, and it sounds like the community Foundation of the Lowcountry came through it thanks to an amazing group of people and a dynamic leader. Reading your story gave me hope as well as a positive perspective on a very challenging year. Congratulations!
