Celebrate National Volunteer Week
April 15-21, 2018

Nonprofits rely heavily on volunteers. In fact, many local nonprofits simply could not function without the generous spirit of the people who donate their time and talent to local causes.
National Volunteer Week, April 15 - 21, is the perfect time to honor the volunteers who make the nonprofit world go around. To celebrate, Community Foundation of the Lowcountry is launching our #LowcountryVolunteers Challenge.

#LowcountryVolunteers Challenge is a fun way to champion volunteerism and share with the world how meaningful volunteering is. As part of the challenge, we’ll award four $2,000 grants to participating nonprofit organizations in Beaufort, Jasper, Hampton and Colleton Counties.
Join us to celebrate the diversity and compassion of all our #LowcountryVolunteers.

There are four ways your nonprofit can win a $2,000 award:

  • $2,000 award for the nonprofit organization with the greatest number of volunteers who post a photograph of our “I volunteer…” sign on Community Foundation of the Lowcountry’s Facebook page during the challenge.

  • $2,000 award for one nonprofit organization that has at least 10 volunteers who post a photo of “I volunteer…” on Community Foundation of the Lowcountry’s Facebook page during the challenge. (The winning organization will be selected randomly from the pool of qualified agencies.)

  • $2,000 award for the nonprofit organization with the greatest number of volunteers who “fan” their agency on Lowcountry Volunteer Connections during the challenge.

  • $2,000 award for one nonprofit organization that has at least 10 volunteers who “fan” their agency on Lowcountry Volunteer Connections during the challenge. (The winning organization will be selected randomly from a pool of qualified agencies.)

Here’s how the challenge works:

On Facebook
Encourage your volunteers to post a photo of themselves on our Facebook page holding an “I volunteer…” sign describing why they volunteer with your organization. During the challenge, ask your volunteers to tag your organization’s Facebook page in the post and encourage them to “like” our page and leave us a message. (If you don't already, follow Community Foundation of the Lowcountry on Facebook and Twitter. Be sure to tag us in your posts using #LowcountryVolunteers as well as @CommunityFoundationoftheLowcountry and @cflowcountry. Also, make sure to set your posts to “public” so we can re-post or retweet them.)

There will be two $2,000 awards made in the Facebook challenge. One $2,000 award will be made to the organization with the largest total number of qualified posts. Another $2,000 award will be randomly selected from a pool of organizations that have at least 10 “I volunteer…” photos posted to our Facebook page during the challenge.

On Lowcountry Volunteer Connections
First, ensure your agency is registered on Lowcountry Volunteer Connections so you can share your service opportunities with our 450+ registered volunteers.

Second, encourage your volunteers to register on Lowcountry Volunteer Connections and then “fan” your agency. By registering and “fanning” your agency, your volunteers will automatically receive e-mails each time your organization posts a volunteer opportunity on the site. This will make it easy for your volunteers to learn about new service opportunities with your organization.

There will be two $2,000 awards made in the Lowcountry Volunteer Connections challenge. One $2,000 award will be made to the organization with the largest total number of “fans” the agency received during the challenge. Another $2,000 award will be randomly selected from the pool of organizations that received at least 10 “fans” from registered volunteers during the challenge.

Start now:

The challenge begins Thursday, March 1st — so get started as soon as possible by sharing this information with your volunteers.

The challenge ends at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 11th:

How to use the “I volunteer…” sign: Click image to download pdf.

Share the “I volunteer…” PDF with all your agency’s volunteers and ask them to create a sign telling why they serve your organization.  Some examples:
I volunteer… at ABC Nonprofit because no one should be hungry.
I volunteer… at XYZ Organization to help people learn to read and write.
I volunteer… at ABC Charity to ensure the Lowcounty remains beautiful for future generations.

Have a friend take a photo of the volunteer with the sign and post it on Community Foundation of the Lowcountry’s Facebook site. Ask your volunteers to tag your organization’s Facebook page in the post and encourage them to “like” our page and leave us a message.

Tips for using the sign:  Use a thick, dark marker to write the message to ensure legibility.  Take the photo close enough to see the volunteer’s face and easily read the sign. Be sure your agency’s name appears on the sign and/or is tagged in the post. Click here to print your "I volunteer..." sign.

The fine print:

Organizations may participate in both the Facebook and Lowcountry Volunteer Connections challenges but may only win one award.

The award is for nonprofit 501(c)3 organizations in Beaufort, Colleton, Hampton and Jasper Counties only.

Each volunteer may only post one “I volunteer…” photo on our Facebook page per organization. The nonprofit organization’s name must appear on the sign and/or be tagged on the post.

Final note:

We hope this award program will inspire all nonprofit agencies to recognize the service volunteers do to help achieve the agency’s mission during National Volunteer Week -- and throughout the year.

If your role includes volunteer recruitment, training and/or management, you may want to join the local chapter of the South Carolina Association for Volunteer Administration (SCAVA), a professional association of your fellow volunteer administrators:  Southern Lowcountry SCAVA.
